The SAC (Società di Gestione dell'Aeroporto di Catania) has communicated that from Monday, March 11 to Wednesday March 20, 2019 there will be urgent maintenance works on the landing area of Catania Fontanarossa airport. Due to this works there can be changes in arrival and departure times, cancellations and some flights could land at other airports. Travelers should contact their airline for updated information. The hourly arrivals will be reduced from 10 to 4 and some flights will land at Comiso airport. Probably Alitalia will cancel some flights and some of Ryanair flights will land in Comiso. The Catania Fontanarossa Airport is the most active in Sicily and the main airport for those visiting Syracuse and south-eastern Sicily. To move between the airport and Syracuse it's possible to use public transport or it's also possible to book a professional and fast private shuttle service provided by Hermes Sicily Tours and operated by local private driver companies. This service will take you directly to your accomodation while the public bus will stop at Syracuse's train station. It's a private shuttle, it means that there are no fixed starting times but you choose your preferred time and a car or minivan will take you to the airport. Most times you will be alone on the van but sometimes if there are other bookings with the same flight you could share the vehicle with other guests.
The travel time between the airport Catania Fontanarossa and Syracuse is about 50 minutes but there can be heavy traffic during the peak times or in case of car accident. Considering also the waiting times at the airport for security checks, if you start from Syracuse to take your flight the departure in suggested 2h30m-3h in advance.

According to local media and local Italian Government sources, due to increased security measures passengers traveling through Catania Airport are being screened outside the airport. This is causing delays in the check-in process.
Airport authorities are advising passengers to arrive at least two hours prior to their flight and to be prepared to wait outside in possible inclement weather. Also, all passengers must bring their pre-printed plane ticket to get into the airport. Passengers are encouraged to check with their airline for possible flight delays and for further information.
